Why did the Apollo 11 rocket need to turn the lunar module around and dock with the landing module in mid flight?
Post Body
I'm watching the documentary Eight Days about the moon landing. During the 3 day flight to the moon, the lunar module detaches from the rest of the rocket, then has to be turned around and docked with the lander while flying at 10,000 mph.
Why didn't they just build them together and save a step? I'm sure there's an excellent reason, I just don't know what it is.
