Why do I wake up hungry in the morning?

I eat 3-4 meals per day, plus snacks. Not starving myself at all, and sometimes have a meal right before bed because of my work schedule. Even so, I wake up almost every morning with a giant hole in my stomach, grumbling and growling and starving. Why?
