Without doctor/or stylist how can i tell what hair/and or skin type i am?

I’d like to know what type or soaps, shampoos or lotions to use that won’t negatively harm my skin or hair and you see so many for dry skin/hair, for fair skin, for all hair/skin types and other titles but I would love to know what to use and in the case of shampoo i’d especially love to know how often to wash it and what else to do or avoid to protect it
