Johnathan Pollard, after being arrested and brought to court, plead guilty in order to avoid a sentence of death or life without parole. As a result, he received a life sentence, albeit, one with parole a possibility, and was subsequently imprisoned for three decades.
My question is, given how seemingly insignificant the date he stole, who he stole it for, and the fact he play guilty, why did the U.S. federal government lay the hammer down on him in its penalty, when other spies have gotten lighter sentences for similar crimes?
