Why does whatsapp web need updates?

Every once in a while it tells me "click here to update"
It's a webpage. Why does it need my approval for updates? youtube doesn't ask me for updates, it just updates/changes as it wants. so why does whatsapp web ask for my permission? its just a webpage??!?! I don't get it
