What's the point of soft launching your S/O?

I understand it in cases where one of the people has a huge online following or cases where showing the person could lead to a dangerous situation (abusive ex, same-sex couple while one hasn't come out, etc.). For everyone else, what's the benefit of soft launching your relationship instead simply revealing who you're dating.
