How do you kayak?

I'm having issues conceptualizing this.
I have some rivers by my house and was thinking about getting a few kayaks to go alone or with my girlfriend. So theoretically, I'll have the rack on my car. I drive it to the drop in point. How am I getting back to the spot I parked? Is it essential to take two cars? She parks hers where we would get out, I pick her up and bring her to the drop in spot and then she drives me back to my car? Is this what everyone else does?
