Why do displacement reactions cause bubbles?

When aluminum reacts with copper sulfate, bubbles are formed as copper is deposited on the aluminum and the aluminum forms aluminum sulfate:
Al CuSO4--->Al2(SO4)3 Cu
But there's no gasses formed in this reaction. What are the bubbles?
