Life with possibility of parole after X years

What’s the point in sentencing someone to life if you’re just going to offer them the repeated opportunity to apply for parole after say, 10 years? In my mind, if the crime was bad enough to give a life sentence, why would one believe that a person’s safe to be out after 10 years (for example)
