Dating with mental illness how?

When is it a good opportunity to talk about your mental illness to you date? I have an serious mental illness that effects me a lot. Although life became little more easier after my anti psychotic medication started to take effect.
I really want to date but don’t feel comfortable enough because of my mental illness. Even my ex bf broke up with me cuz of my mental illness which he has all right to do.
