Why are fictional machines named things like "___-tron 4000?

I've seen many things use this seriously and unseriously, in cartoons and throwaway jokes and what not. Someone will invent something and call it the "stab-a-tron 3000". Where did this naming convention come from? I've never heard of a real machine named that.
