How is the game as of 2020? Is it worth getting on sale?

I was thinking of purchasing the game on PC for sale and I heard a lot about its ups and downs. Has it become a lot better now?
I wanted to experience it from a “multiplayer” perspective rather than solo content, so as someone who enjoys online gameplay would it be a good game to pick up if I am mainly going to play it with randoms/friends? I’m assuming there is no matchmaking system right?
