What was that fan shaped flora that kept appearing on every planet in NMS 1.0?

Weird question, but I remember a fan shaped flora that looked like coral that would appear all over the place, driving people insane, since it was not randomly generated, it just kinda stuck out everywhere, and wasn't even useful since it didn't provide a unique resource. Anyone have screenshots or more info about that weird thing? I consider it a part of NMS history lol. But I can't find more info about it.
