I moved into a nondescript single family home and I want to replace my useless lawns with a pollinator garden, some sort of water fixture, a tea garden, and a vegetable garden. A landscaper friend has offered to help me convert my front and back yards into a no-mow environment - I just have to bring the vision. I've sketched a few ideas but I'm not good at making it look nice.
I'm working with:
A small front yard with some shrubs, but mostly grass. There is a little circle in the center of the yard where natives already grow. There is a brick walkway that wasn't installed properly and weeds/grass grow through the cracks ALL. THE. TIME. The previous owners would just spray it down with weed killer. I'm trying to avoid that. There's a driveway that used to be gravel but now is mostly weeds and grass.
A larger, fenced-in back yard with some flower boxes built in around the fence. There are rose bushes in the flower boxes. Otherwise, the backyard is just one big rectangle of grass that needs cut. My neighbors have a large walnut tree that drops branches and leaves into my yard and limits the amount of direct sunlight that my backyard gets each day.
Anyone really creative with ideas for how to tackle this? Anyone know of any good yard design apps? Am I in over my head?
