I want to replace our front lawn with a different ground cover. I know nothing about plants and need some advice.

• It has to be as low maintenance as possible because I don't know anything about plants and won't be able to do much maintenance myself.
• I need something that my suburban neighbours won't hate me for. It has to look green or colourful and pretty.
• The space is about 1000 square feet and gets plenty of sunlight.
• We have had some issues with weeds in the past.
• I also want to plant a tree.
• I live in southern Ontario, Hardiness Zone 6a/6b
• I will hire someone to do the work.

I am thinking of creeping thyme. Is that a good idea? What are other options I should consider?
