When the Switch launched it was very barebones, the promised online wasn't ready yet and would inevitably be delayed. The customization options were limited (like menu color and UI option). External apps like Internet Browser, Streaming Apps, Youtube weren't avaiable. We all thought that perhaps the Switch was rushed and all these features would be drip-fed within that year. While some things were drip fed like hulu, youtube and SOME customization options for profile icons, menu color, MOST never came. The void of messaging on the system is alarming when it was possible to do it on the WiiU and Wii! I truly believed it would come and have been waiting and nothing! They won't even address the reason why there is no messaging. Then they incorporate voice chatting on there Switch Online phone app but don't include messaging there either.
I feel like messaging is essential to game consoles now a days, there will be people who say you can message people through other means like discord, text etc. But what about friends you meet via these games, I can make friends and parties with people on Rocket League but cannot message them outside it, so they have to be on Rocket League or I can't message them. Nintendo let's us add people who you played with online yet we can't do anything with that!
I am trying to think of reasons why Nintendo would omit messaging! Is it due to security reasons?
