My Sunday Night Shower Thoughts About The Longevity Of The Switch
Post Body

Now this is likely going to go down as well as a tonne bag of sh*t but roll with me for a minute or two.

What if this is Nintendo's last iteration of a console. I don't mean that they'll be out of the console game altogether after the switch - rather that future console releases will be upgraded versions of the switch under the same family. You know, better processor, internal memory, all the bells and whistles.

Why do I say this you ask? That's ridiculous you're probably saying. And yeah you're right. But I have my reasons for thinking this.

Whilst not directly a competitor, the switch is below the technical specs of the playstation and xbox one. And will only drop again once the next generation is released. Is it likely that Nintendo is looking to bring out another console to battle this? Probably not, given that the switch is still selling like hot cakes as it's got the perfect balance between handheld gaming and console gaming. And nintendo is still investing in first party titles which are expected over the next 24 months. Plus we've seen port after port of previous gen games which are selling well because people love to play them on the go.

So how does Nintendo continue to sell the switch over the long term? Simple - streaming. This isn't an unusual concept given that nintendo has already trialed this with the switch in japan with Assassins Creed Odyssey, which is a game that the switch would in no way handle without some major development sacrifices.

And if Nintendo were to go down this route, the switch would be the perfect entry console. It's cheaper than other consoles on the market and versatile. This would give nintendo more opportunity and money to further invest in games. First party titles are being produced which are perfectly adequate on the switch and whilst not performing on the level of current gen consoles, still have the nintendo appeal that guarantees they sell.

In my opinion, this would be such a great move. And ensure a lengthy run with the device which could outlast other generations.

TL:DR The switch could easily last over the long term with the introduction of game streaming. And would mean Nintendo never have to release another console again!
