Has anyone ever experienced this lack of focus?

I have a D600, I was shooting with a 1.8 50mm prime, also Nikon lens.

About a month ago, I shot several hundred photos at a sporting event- my frames were coming out very well, very crisp and clear.

Today, I shot several hundred photos at another sporting event and for some reason none of my frames were in focus.

Has anyone experienced this before? I always keep a lens cover on when not in use and I use back button focus so I can change focus quickly while getting action shots.

Any insights are appreciated.
