New to gachas, how much should I be whaling?

This is pretty much my first gacha. To my understanding, gachas are similar to gambling at Vegas. I'm not against that at all, I know what I signed up for. I see a lot of people with tons of SSRs already, and I'm wondering how they did it. Is it mostly through whaling or efficient grinding? What are some efficient ways to spend or grind? If whaling is key, how much should I expect to spend for about 3-4 SSRs if I get pulls from completing the campaign as well?
