Just finished my 200th game. Some questions now, and observations.
Post Body

For clarification, this is the first MOBA I've ever played. I have next to zero knowledge of Dota and League of Legends. I imagine that they're somewhat similar but just keep in mind that I have nothing to compare HoTS to. I picked this game up because I've been playing Blizzard games since I was a wee one. That being said, I absolutely love this game and was quickly hooked.

So I've played 200 games now and about 15 of them have been Hero League. I reached lvl 40 in Quick Match awhile ago and I still mostly play QM. I try to play parties when I can but I would say about 80-85% of those games were solo. My overall winrate is at about 45ish percent, I would say. Maybe 42 or 43. It's been getting better. I still get mired in the occasional losing streak but I think my last 100 games went a lot better than my first 100.

I tend to play mostly Warrior but I'm trying to get better at everyone. The goal is to get everyone to lvl 5 to get that gold bonus but I think it's just good to have a general knowledge of how every character plays. (Just a little background for you.)

Now then.

  • One thing that I've consistently noticed is that for the majority of my games, I'm right near the top in Takedowns and right near the bottom in XP, sometimes by large margins. I've noticed it gets better when I play a ranged unit and I will be the first to say that I do quite a bit of roaming, always looking for the possible pick off if I can get someone to go with me. How can I be doing better at this? Does it mean just staying in lanes longer at the beginning before trying to run around everywhere? I don't know if this is just a side effect of me playing mostly melee warrior roles but it happens when I heal too. And when I heal, I'm constantly floating looking for who needs some heals. I'm also damn-near religious about the objective. Do heroes not grant very much XP when you're credited with a takedown? If two heroes are within XP range of minions, do they both get XP for one minion death? In other words, I don't understand the details of XP and how it is earned for your team. I understand its function, just not how it is doled out and acquired.

  • As previously stated, I have only played about 15 HL and am 7-8. The skill level in HL, as I've experienced it, makes QM seem like a whole different game. It was dramatic jump in skill level for me and I can hang most of the time. But what I've noticed is that in HL, the players are not only much better on average but much more...unpleasant as well. The give up lots faster and are much more prone to give and not take criticism. Some people talk shit in QM as well but I notice it a lot more in HL. I've even had a guy message me about my game once afterwards. No one from a QM match has ever done that, even my very first games when I had no idea what was going on. I've found that I generally have a lot more fun in QM even if I lose more. Winning in HL is ridiculously satisfying but losing in HL is much worse than losing in QM. I guess it all depends on what people prefer.

  • Best map for me: Sky Temple, 65% winrate. Worst map: Blackhearts Bay, 25% winrate. Fuck that map.

I thought I had more to write. I thought I had more questions. These are just some of the things I've been thinking about recently. Overall, this is an excellent game and I'm excited to see how Blizzard is going to improve on it.
