How do I add a new number using contacts in Lollipop?

So I have call A. I want to add in Person B, but I don't know their number. How do I use my contacts to add that call instead of typing in their phone number? Am I missing something obvious?
Or how about transferring? If I can't add, can I transfer using my contacts and not the dial pad?
I know you can press the phone with the plus and type out some of the phone number and select the contract... But each time I do that, it doesn't work. It just doesn't call the second person.
