Need Newf owner advice on whether my situation is ready for one
Post Body

Hi everyone! Ever since I was a kid I have always wanted a Newf. Babe was our family dog (passed when I was 7) and now that I'm on my own I am looking for a fur companion and am consistently drawn to the Newf. I am 37, not married, no kids, but my job is very stable. Very little travel and a consistent 8-4:30 M-F kind of schedule. I have a home, but it is small (750 sq ft or so of finished area and an unfinished basement). There is no yard whatsoever so exercise would have to be walks in the evening or morning around the neighborhood. I do work on a college campus and could take walks there on green space or sidewalks. Our campus also has a large lake that I imagine a Newf would enjoy spending some time in. There are a couple of good (so I've been told) groomers/dog places in our town (rural area). I also own a four-door F150 so going for rides or transporting wouldn't be an issue.

I think often times people get dogs without thinking of the animal and thinking only of themselves. I want to be sure the lifestyle and environment I can offer is equally beneficial to the dog as he/she would be to me. Figured Newf loyalists would be the people to ask. My father is vehemently against this saying that Newfs are too expensive to own, too expensive to care for, too expensive to feed, and they have to have land to run and play on. He has obviously owned one before. He also says that the wastes on walks would be too big to simply grocery bag pick up and dispose of. I'm hopeful he's just using hyperbole as he's wont to do sometimes.

So, newf friends and fans, what say you?
