The history of Byker- why did it go to shit?
Post Body
Hi all, I’m doing a YouTube video on the history of Byker. I was looking at past photos from the 1920s-early 2000s and it struck me how vibrant and quaint it seemed as a shopping/entertainment district with all the shops and multiple theatres that opened over the years. Walking down Shields road now tells a different story than it would’ve 40 years ago. I’m a tad too young to remember it all and I’d really value more perspective from people who lived it or know those who’ve lived it :)

I've lived in Byker for 7 years and I feel the same. Heaton and Ouseburn completely changed in my time here, and you can feel Byker is next. I even see the slowly rising number of people in cool clothes and mullets moving into the houses around me
