This summer I'll be arriving at Newark airport for travel in the USA/canada/mexico with literally no destination. My plan is to go where the wind goes for a full 2 months, hitchhiking, couchsurfing anything that comes om my way! How hard/illegal is it to ask people going into the car/bus they've rented for joining them? (for free ofcourse, that's what hitchhiking is(a))
Greatings, A clean cut, 22 (by then) year old studend from the Netherlands with 2 months of semesterbreak.
Do not hitchhike First, it's not safe. Secondly, it is illegal in New Jersey. http://hitchwiki.org/en/New_Jersey I mean, you are an adult, so ultimately I can't tell you what to do. But I wouldn't recommend it. Honestly, the only suggestion I have is to save up some extra money to pay for public transport. There is a train that goes from the airport to Newark Penn Station or right into New York City. Newark and New York City are excellent starting off points to other places like Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., etc. because of all the public transit options. check out www.njtransit.com, amtrak.com. Hope this helps a little :) Good luck!

It's hard to say. The US is a very large country with varied customs depending on the regions. I can tell you that in the New York and New Jersey area, you really don't see people hitchhiking, and even when you do, it's looked at with suspicion. I'm not going to say that everyone is out to hurt you, but unfortunately, you don't always know who you are getting a ride with, even when someone does stop. It's a big risk to take :\
Edit: failed at altering NJ abbreviation to full spelling. that was awkward
