[Opinion] "Operation Stone Wall": How the Mets could field arguably the best up-the-middle defense in baseball late in games

Alternate title: Why the Mets should cut AGon, platoon Bruce and Flores at 1B, and use AGon's roster spot to add Luis Guillorme to the 25 man roster.

Part 1, First base: Jay Bruce is very good at hitting baseballs thrown by right handed pitchers. He is not very good at playing right field. Wilmer Flores is very good at hitting baseballs thrown by left handed pitchers. He is not very good at playing...well, just about anywhere in particular. These guys both have very slow footspeed and defensive range, making them well suited for a position like 1B where they don't have to move much. Put those guys together at 1B and you gain a few clear benefits:

1) A probable >120 wRC offensive production from each guy on his strong side splits

2) Gets their bats into the lineup while minimizing the negative defensive impact of each. Keeping Flores away from 3B allows you to keep Frazier's plus glove at the hot corner, and keeping Bruce away from RF keeps Nimmo and Conforto's plus gloves in right.

3) Eases the outfield playing time logjam once Conforto returns, allowing Conforto and Nimmo to both maintain regular playing time as young players who need regular at bats to continue their development while still giving plenty of playing time to Bruce against RHP where his power numbers best shine.

Part 2, The late game defensive shuffle AKA "Operation Stone Wall": We've seen the Mets use Lagares as a late game defensive substitute to tighten up defense to defend close leads late in games. He's a closer's best friend. Seriously, Familia probably owes Lagares about a dozen beers by now for all the times he's made a highlight-reel play to get him off of the hook. You know who hasn't been Familia's best friends? Pretty much every middle infielder the Mets have thrown out there for the last few years except for Rosario.

The plan: Late in games swap Lagares into CF (leaving either Nimmo or Conforto in RF, either is fine since they're both good defenders there), and swap Guillorme in for Cabrera at 2B. This gives the Mets an up-the-middle defense of Rosario at SS, Guillorme at 2B, and Lagares in CF. This is a pitcher's wet dream in terms of the kind of gloves he could have standing behind him. Add in the fact that they'll also have Frazier (plus glove at 3B), Cespedes (plus glove in LF), and Nimmo/Conforto (plus gloves in RF) behind them and you're going to see a lot of balls in play turning into outs. Ramos and Familia rejoice!
