There's been a lot of discussion already about how the Mets are going to address their CF situation this offseason, especially in the context of finding someone who can play the position and hit right handed pitching. Juan Lagares has struggled mightily against righties so far in his career, hitting .254/.286/.340 against RHP compared to .279/.325/.427 against LHP.
A lot of hype has built up around 22 year old Brandon Nimmo since being taken in the first round of the draft in 2011 by the Mets, and at least a little bit of that hype has deflated as the sort of power that scouts hoped he'd develop hasn't quite materialized for the young southpaw. He's shown a lot of promise in drawing long at bats and getting on base at an impressive rate, but his overall slash line from 2014-2015 in the minors of .277/.384/.406 (.790 OPS) doesn't quite look like the elite outfield prospect that we were promised. However, a closer look at his work so far in the minors tells a tale of two players: One is a potential five-tool, high on-base slugger against RHP. The other is a weak-hitting, glove-first player against LHP. Let's break down Nimmo's 2014-2015 stats:
Opponent | PA | Average | OBP | Slugging | OPS | HRs | K% | BB% | ISO |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
RHP | 685 | .295 | .403 | .452 | .855 | 14 | 21.1% | 14.3% | .157 |
LHP | 289 | .236 | .339 | .300 | .639 | 1 | 23.2% | 12.5% | .064 |
All | 974 | .277 | .384 | .406 | .790 | 15 | 21.7% | 13.8% | .129 |
We can see here that while Nimmo would probably benefit from more time in the minors to develop into a more complete player and develop a better approach against LHP, given the need of the club to obtain a platoon partner for Lagares in 2016 it would make sense for the Mets to accelerate Nimmo's timeline in order to address the needs of the big league club (as they did with Conforto in 2015). Allowing Nimmo to fill the very specific role that the Mets would have to spend big money in free agency to fill would leave them free to use their 2016 spending money making a splash in the relief pitching market by potentially acquiring all three of Jerry Blevins, Darren O'Day, and Joakim Soria in order to turn the Mets' most glaring weakness in 2015 into a strength.
