[Opinion] The Mets are being too passive about allowing prospects to hit their way to promotions. AAAA players like Nieuwenhuis and Muno get roster spots while high-upside prospects like Conforto (.921 AA OPS) and Herrera (.863 AAA OPS) waste at bats at levels that do not challenge them

The Mets offense this season, for lack of a better adjective, has been horrendous. It's clear that this team is not going to be able to take the next step to being a legitimate contender without at least some semblance of offensive production. With TdA still a few weeks away from return and Wright's ETA being "we have no fucking idea" it's time for Sandy to accept that the roster he has right now just isn't enough to make it to October with so many holes in our lineup. He has two options in front of him to fix the problem: get help from within, or get help from outside. Trading for outside talent provides a more reliable fix in the form of a proven major league bat, but has the downside of costing the Mets equal value in trade - most likely in the form of one of their blue chip young pitchers. The other option is to start moving bats up through the system that look ready to advance and potentially help the major league club out in 2015.

Personally, I think Sandy should explore the intra-club options in July before pulling the trigger on a potentially franchise-altering trade. The idea that prospects are so fragile that coming up to the majors for a cup of tea will somehow mentally scar them if they don't have a dominant debut is just plain silly. These guys aren't little leaguers, they're professional athletes. Give them a chance to hit in the majors, and if they can't provide some relief for our offense by the trade deadline then send them back to the minors to get more reps in and make a trade. But I don't think we should be willing to give up a major piece like Thor or Matz on the trade block until we've first done some due diligence to figure out whether we have a solution to our hitting problem right under our nose already. As much as I enjoy following Conforto as he embarrasses the shit out of almost every AA pitcher he comes across and seeing Herrera making highlight reel double play turns in AAA, I'd much rather see what they can do to help the team whose win total I actually care about.
