Preparing a server for a LAN party - suggestions?
Post Body

I'll be going to QuakeCon in August, and as part of it I'm going to just put up a dedicated TF2 server (hopefully linked to a domain name, due to LAN game discovery issues last year) and try to run it for the duration of the con. I've done a bit of googling, though I do have a few questions:

1) Is there a good way to properly load test it? I've run it through some maps with a full bot loadout (32) and everything seemed fine, CPU and RAM wise. I am wondering, though, if players will cause more resource usage than bots, especially since replay will be turned on, and I am planning on playing other games while the server is running.

2) How much bandwidth is replay likely to take up? And is there a way to get it to automatically clear old replays from the server that it's uploading to?

2) Is there a way to make it not display a crash dialogue when it crashes? I'd had a few issues during bot testing where trying to create a nav mesh would crash the server, and it would bring up a "this program is not working" message that I needed to manually click on. I already have a script set up that will automatically restart the server if it goes down, I'd just like it to be hands free in case it decides to crash while I'm at a panel or something.

3) Additonally, is there a way to have it start on a random map? I can change the maps while it's going, sure, but I think it'd be more interesting if it didn't always start on the same map, particularly since I'm sure I'll need to restart it at least once during the con, and particularly if it crashes, I'd like to have it keep going with a random map.

4) I already downloaded a large pack of popular maps, and out of it I got 639 CTF, CP and KOTH maps (it did have arena maps, training maps, jump maps, etc, but I'm not going to run those). Are there multiple large collections of TF2 map packs, or is 639 maps about the best I'm going to do? (I realize that there's not actually going to be time to have them all rotate through, but still, I'd like to go in to it with as much variety as possible). Are there any other types of maps (like Territory Control) that I don't need a special plugin for?

5) Are there any scripts that will allow the server to precache things in the RAM? I'll have 16GB on the system it's running on by the time the con comes up, and I think it might run a bit better if it goes ahead and loads up whatever it needs for the next map change, before it loads the next map.

And anything else would be helpful as well. :P I've never done a dedicated server before, and I just want to make sure it's done right so that I don't have a billion issues when I get there.
