Ive been playing tf2 for about 2 weeks now, and I definitely will eventually become p2p

I noticed that on the team fortress official f2p faq, it says if you get a retail version of tf2 you get the proof of purchase hat, and i like that hat. however, would i be able to get a retail version of tf2, and still use all the stuff i have already like unlocks and all my achievements and stats? and also is there even a good way to get said retail version. oh i see theres not really a point to getting it because i just want the hat and does the orange box method still work?
