My 13 month old son has had major ups and downs with his sleeping. The latest struggle was a major major regression starting right on his 1st birthday. We went away for vacation where he slept in bed with us and after that decided that sleeping in his crib was not for him anymore. Cue three full weeks of bedtime tantrums, waking up screaming every 90 minutes overnight, fighting us tooth and nail when we tried putting him back down. We had his one year appointment three weeks into that regression and I brought it up to his Ped, and she said to put him down and let him cry to sleep. He was associating us with sleep and wasn’t able to fall asleep without us. I really would not have done it if I didn’t love and trust our pediatrician. It killed me the first night, I just cried along with him outside his door. But he was asleep within 30 minutes. Next night was better, now three weeks later… we have an A sleeper!! He’s happy to go into his crib at night after our book, bottle, and lullaby. He self soothes through any overnight wakeups, and he’s a little ray of sunshine when I get him up in the morning.
So yeah. If you’re at your wits end like I was but hesitant to try CIO, just rip off the bandaid and give it a shot if it’s something you think might work for you. We’re all so much better off!
One thing I wish I know about CIO before doing it is that it isn't a one time and done type of situation. I know it doesn't happen to everyone but we have to CIO/Retrain about every 3-4 months. I wouldn't change doing it and now know how long to let her cry, what type of cry it is, etc. but I wish someone had told me you may have "retrain" multiple times. Also, my girl has regressed so badly for naps CIO doesn't work...so there's that too...ended up getting a bigger bed so I can co-sleep for naps. Nights are 100% fine though and she sleeps independently....can't have it all I guess lol
