Science - Brain Science! 19/5/15
Post Body

Arrietty stands before the class, hands in the trenchcoat as per usual. She watches all the students in her care and then bunches all her hair up, draping it down over her right shoulder. Grateful for the curls in it. And then she begins to talk.

“Welcome to Science. My name, as some of you may know, is Dr. Arrietty Johan. Not ‘red’ as I have been called. I have only one rule, do not fuck around. I’ll be doing my best to make the classes fun, but that can’t happen properly if you’re little shits.”

A hologram appears in front of her, using the same technology that Tony Stark does. She swipes her hand on it and spins the brain being depicted. She taps a part of it and it lights up green. “I have a PhD in Nanotechnology and a Masters in Brain Science and Psychology. Meaning, I know this like it’s the back of my pale white hand.”

She taps the green part again and it expands, listing off information beside it including things it does. The wording is in a nice blue hue, glowing softly. “This, is the Occipital lobe. Visual imagery from the eyes comes through to here via the Thalamus. It’s responsible for encoding information such as motion, colour and orientation.”

She taps it again to minimise it and then opens a different part of the brain in a purple glow. The Frontal lobe. That squishy larger piece in the front of our heads. “Frontal Lobe. This is responsible for calculating the future possibilities and consequences of actions, and is able to differentiate between good and bad actions. It’s also the part that stamps out socially unacceptable actions and knows the similarities and differences between events.”

She watches the class for a moment, ensuring that they are in fact taking notes on the matter before closing down the hologram for a moment. “So, as you can see just from that small explanation, the Brain is an interesting organ.”She cracks a smile and pushes her hair to the right further. “

She spins the Hologram some more, before closing it down flatly. She then presses a switch on the side of her desk and triggers displays in everyone's desk. They have a version of the hologram, but confined to the screen. Nothing 3D. “The screens will allow you to follow on with the lesson whilst making notes of your own, and if something captures your interest on there, you can bookmark it for later reading or come back to it. Cool, eh?”

She brings up the brain again, and then clicks a button that says ‘Damages.’

Immediately a list of symptoms and causes falls down in a flipping motion, leaving a long list.

“Typically, the reason the Occipital lobe gets screwed up is because of Car crashes, falls or even firearms. And the injuries sustained can be cuts in our visual field, Difficulty with locating objects and identifying colors, hallucinations, word blindness, difficulty to recognise drawings, struggles with reading and writing and finally, problems tracking movement of an object.”

“And for the frontal lobe… Paralysis is an effect. So is being able to make complex multi-step things. Like a coffee. You also get problems interacting with others and a Loss of flexibility in thinking. Inability to focus on a single thought and focus is gone. You get a lot of mood changes and changes in personality or social behaviour. Problem solving and language also becomes fucked.”

“So there ya go kids, don’t hit your head.” She tells everyone, leaning back on the desk and raising her brow at them. “Anyone got questions for a Dr?”
