Whats the deal with everyone wanting flowers all the time?

Title. I grew up playing AC on gamecube. Only played a few hours of AC on wii, but my wife and I picked up this one, and I"ve played it every day since.
This is the first time I've followed any AC "communities" while playing, and I'm blown away by all the posts everyday of people looking for flowers.
Am I missing something?
