Where do we fall on surgically broken bones?

My wife revealed to me that her friend’s bones grew weird and had to be surgically broken, set, and screwed together so they’d grow back strong. Apparently this only got seriously bad after giving birth.
On one hand, her bones were growing wrong and were strong enough that it didn’t matter to them; doctors had to do it manually and surgically. On the other hand, they were technically broken.
