I'm 39 and haven't broken any bones, but when I was 18, I stopped having my period due to malnourishmest (poverty and orthorexia) and overtraining.
I called a doctor, and he said "That sounds convenient, congrats!", so I trusted him and didn't try to do anything about it. Two years later, when I was 20, one injury too many made me quit my sport and my periods came back. And it wasn't until it was too late that I finally realised how serious it actually was.
For those who might not know: At least for women, our bone density increases during our teenage years and peaks around 20. Then it stays pretty much the same, with a slow decline, for the rest of our fertile lives.
After menopause, due to the decrease in eostregen, women's bone density rapidly declines. And depending on how high the peak was, and how we've lived, that may or may not become a problem.
But if a woman's body is stressed to the point where periods stop, the effect on the skeleton is the same as after penopause. In other words - for two of the years where my bones should have been built strong to reach their peak, they instead rapidly leaked calcium and got weaker.
Since I learned the truth, I've done my best. I eat calcium and vitamin D, I walk a lot and do strength training which helps maintain bone density, but... I don't know if it's enough. I've never measured my bone density and even if I find out how to get an appointment for that, I don't know if I dare. But I plan to live to be 100 and in that time, I think it's unfortunately more likely than not that I'll be exposed as a pathetic BBB. Potentially the type that breaks their bones for just about anything and nothing.
One person did mention it but yeah, it's really shitty and I'm still angry about it.
Ha, thanks!
My mother made it to 75, I hope I can match that (without being overly careful).
I know!!! I was so angry about it when I learned how wrong he was to dismiss it, and I still am.
