For reasons I don't quite understand, the YouTube algorithm decided I should see a video about how to behave when pulled over for DUI (from a lawyer in Virginia). That video was so interesting I sought out another one, and the one I found was from a different lawyer in Virginia, and it gave nearly identical advice:

  • Be polite and cooperative to the extent possible. Be respectful.
  • Show your ID and registration if you're asked for it
  • Don't engage in talk/answer questions. Questions like "do you know why I pulled you over?" or "where are you coming from/going to?" should not be answered. Just don't say anything. Definitely don't admit to drinking, not even a single drop.
  • Refuse a field sobriety test. If you wind up getting arrested THEN you should cooperate with a breathalyzer.
    • I think breathalyzer is better than blood because it is less accurate and easier to contest in court, although this wasn't mentioned in the videos I watched.
  • If asked if they have permission to search your vehicle, clearly state that you do not give them that permission

I have no intention of driving under the influence and I highly doubt I'll ever have to use this advice. That said I still have questions:

  • Is the Virginia advice correct for Nevada?
  • What about the remaining 48 states? Is this advice correct for the entire country?
  • Would it be a bad idea to use this approach if being pulled over for a traffic violation? (I'm thinking that it is a bad idea).
