In his interview with the New York Times, Trump argues that the United States is not required to defend NATO member states that do not pay the pledged 2% of their GDP to the alliance. Trump surrogate Newt Gingrich went even further, arguing that NATO members that weren't meeting their pledges were sources of weakness, not strength. However, Democrats and other Republicans are reportedly angered, with Mitch McConnel stating that "NATO is the most important military alliance in world history. I want to reassure our NATO allies that if any of them get attacked, we'll be there to defend them."
Who is right here? How important has NATO been for geopolitical security in Western Europe? Furthermore, what implications could this have on geopolitical stability?
