Best way to travel to Friesland

Hi there, I will be staying in Hoorn for 6 nights. I'd like to take a day trip to Friesland (my family was from there). Would renting a car for the day be the best option? I understand it's more rural and my thinking is that a car may be a more reliable form of transportation for a day in that area.
