Backstory: I added a physical security key to my Google account and removed sign-in access to old devices like an old fossil watch, old Google Pixel 3 (returned to Google) and an old chromecast. I then got phone notifications saying I cancelled my nest aware. When I logged into Google Home and Google Nest, I found everything gone. My family was able to re-add me to Google Home but Nest had everything removed. Even better my Nest aware wasn't cancelled but could not be added to Nest only Google Home recognized it. Support said I would have to re-add everything to a new Nest Home and they would escalate my ticket regarding Nest aware. Here is where the trouble began...
I was trying to reset my Nest guard. I was following the instructions in the app. BAD IDEA. I should of read online about needing to put the Nest guard into unarmed mode before resetting as the Nest will not reset while armed (makes sense now!), While trying to hold 2 button down and then 5 button down, I held down the alarm side button (my fault!). The alarm starts blasting! The tag won't work! The app won't work as the Nest guard is not attached! The passcode isn't' working! Did I forget the passcode? We don't enter it often as we use the tag or the app.
Now I am in trouble, entering in the passcode too many time places it on cooldown. I had it wrapped in towels, stuffed in a box and shut in the fridge. The thing hurts after a while! I search for everywhere to look for the passcode: emails, sms, the box, anywhere! I didn't write it anywhere.
Did you know it can take the Nest guard 12 hours to wear down its back up battery?!
I hang my head and go to Google Nest support. I am desperate at this point to try anything. We have been writing down and crossing off every combination of our passcode that we could think of. Many combinations aren't even viable but we're trying. We take the nest out of the fridge when the cooldown is down, put on ear protection and try combinations til it locks us out again.
Low level support basically tells me I am SOL as the app (which is the home is gone) or the passcode is the only thing that will turn off the screaming monster. But they send me off to Senior Support.
Nest Senior Support was incredibly helpful!!!! Through speaking with him, the support tech learned we had a lock we used to use through the guard. He asked us to try the lock passcode. The thing about the lock passcode is we use it every day without fail.
We put on our ear protection, pull the screaming monster out of the fridge and success!
TLDR: If you forget your Guard passcode then lock passcode work as well.
