I have a Nest thermostat connected to a gas fireplace using a C wire power transformer because the fireplace only has an R and W wire. This works great normally and during a recent power outage the battery kicked in as it’s supposed to. During the power outage the thermostat displayed an error e298 and wouldn’t turn on the fireplace. The fireplace used to work with no power with the old fashioned thermostat. Is there any way to bypass this and operate the fireplace during the power outage with the Nest? Thank you!
If it has enough battery to run. It runs like normal. If it runs out of battery you're out of luck.
Your best bet is to have an analog thermostat for emergencies. https://a.co/d/6q3ublT something like this.

Sorry I must have misunderstood a bit.
E298 is just telling you that the nest can't communicate with the fireplace because the fireplace circuit is down.
If your fireplace worked on thermostat during power outages before I would double check your fireplace battery, but without constant power coming from the fireplace there is nothing for the nest to switch on. This would be true for the numbering of R and W mentioned before aswell.
Without more information about your fireplace it's hard to say how no power operation works.
