Please excuse the question: why nerf instead of airsoft?

I'm interested in playing nerf with my children. I live in a country were airsoft is very popular and no one plays with nerf blasters.
It seems that modded nerf blasters shoot at high enough speeds that it can hurt. So... about the same as airsoft, no? In that case, why are you guys excited about nerf rather than airsoft?
