Tips on how to enjoy the festivities?

I am in KTM until the third. I am afraid I haven't the first clue about the festival going on nor how I should best enjoy it.
Firstly, what is it's name? Why does it happen? Somebody mentioned animal sacrifices, where do I check that out? Anything else is much appreciated.
