New to the Anime

I tried getting into this show many times, but kept losing interests because I'm not a fan of cyber type stuff and giant robots. I'm also confused what this show is about. Can someone explain what this show is about and what are some reasons you like this anime? Also after the anime what do I watch next?
I really want to get into this anime though because I think the character designs is cool
