I saw TLJ is the theatre, mostly liked it (the whole casino B plot left a bad taste, but whatever).
So then, of course, everyone starts to tell me why Holdo is literally the devil and she's the reason everyone died and you know this, because you live on the same internet I do. And I couldn't really remember, I mean, I didn't recall her being that bad, but I wasn't exactly taking notes. Kylo didn't have a shirt on, I was distracted.
So I just watched it again. And I'd like to lay out Poe's actions, and the exactly three times we see him interact with Holdo.
He disobeys a direct order and gets most of his team killed. I didn't count, but I'm guessing somewhere around 60-75% He then argues with the general, still insisting he was right and she was wrong.
Laia goes down, Holdo steps up.
Interaction One: The now captain Dameron (Resistance hierarchy chart doesn't list vice admiral, but it's generally between rear admiral and admiral, so he's now rear-admiral, colonel, commander, major -- at least 5 ranks below her, at this point). He is immediately patronizing, telling her things she already knows, demanding she answer to him, and trying to take over. I'm pretty sure that rates like a court martial, on top of the one he should already be facing for disobeying a direct order. But no, he just gets sent to his room without supper. Where he can start ignoring, over-ruling, and undermining the vice admiral who totally should trust him -- because he's so trustworthy.
Interaction Two: He's now yelling at the vice admiral, being destructive, throwing things, and accusing her of treason. Yes, I can see how Reddit thinks he's the best man for any job. At this point he probably should have been hauled off to the brig and left to rot, but no, he's just escorted from the bridge so he can immediately blab all of their plans over the radio so Del Toro can use them to make a deal and get a bunch of people killed, later. Soooooo trustworthy.
Interaction Three: Mutiny. That's what that's called. In the US, that's the death penalty. The UK is somewhat nicer. I imagine the rebellion can't really afford to go around executing people. I still don't imagine he should be getting a gold star on his homework, this week. I glad all that trust in him was not misplaced!
He shows a lot of character growth at the end of the movie -- after getting most of the resistance killed, and watching Holdo sacrifice herself. But anyone who thinks Poe should have been told, consulted, kept in the loop, or anything other than tied up and tossed in a closet has some pretty serious disorder going on.
