What if instead of the United Nations of Earth the Aliens met the Blooms of Gaea plant humans from Stellaris who have small... clearly crow inspired bird freinds who are omnivores and part of the Gaian reproduction process through their fruit
Gaians are also verry enviromentally concious being Fanatic Egalitarian and Pacifist
For even more of a complication have the crows be a sapient sub species and Gaians already fairly established so they can stand a chance against the federation when they try to fuck with their bird buddies
