Memory Transcription Subject: Ilja, Venlil Mother

Date [Standardized Human Time]: July 20th, 2137

I heaved a sigh as I stepped off the train, shifting as much as I can to ease my aching back without disturbing Elsa.

Thankfully, my daughter slept fitfully against my light brown chest wool, in spite of the din of the station. Two full claws of fussing and squalling finally wore her out, thank the stars.

"You gonna need any more help, miss?" A low, gravely voice asked from behind me, reminding me that I hadn't made the trip alone.

"No, home's not far from here. Thank you again, young man!" I answered, looking behind me and bobbing my tail in thanks. The Human nodded, then gave a close-mouthed smile and a little wave to Elsa before departing.

I chuckled, carefully grooming my daughter's wool as I watched him walk off.

"That's why we live in Longplain now, puppy," I whispered to my baby, "Because there's a whoooole bunch of Humans there, who love nothing more than a little ball of fluff like you, just like your new daddy does!"

With the work paw behind me and the promise of rest and a good grooming from all-too-dexterous hands ahead of me, my steps lightened and I walked forward with a smile on my snout.

Right up until a silver-suited Venlil stepped into my path and killed my good mood.

"Ma'am, I saw you walking off that train with that Predator." They said, voice muffled by their rebreather.

"Of course one of you brahkasses would be stalking around the station in full kit." I thought, carefully swallowing the growl that wanted to climb out of me.

"There's nothing to worry about, we only shared a ride from Little Hill to here." I said, putting on my chipper customer service voice.

"Little Hill? Ma'am, that's a full claw that you and your child were exposed to a Predator." The Exterminator said, leaning their head towards me.

My paw tightened around Elsa.

"And what of it?" I said, ears pinning back.

"Ma'am, I'm going to need you to come with me to the office, we can check you over for injuries and have your child screened for early PD signs there."

"They did not just say that."

"I'm just fine, or I was until you decided to take my good mood and kill it." I bit out, taking a step back.

"Ma'am, you've just been survived a very dangerous claw, if you would just come with me-"

"So help me, if he reaches for my baby, I'll show him what a real Predator looks like!" I thought as he stepped forward. My paw pressed my daughter to my chest as I started unsheathing the claws of my free paw.

Then stopped when I noticed a group of Humans staring at me and the Exterminator.

"Thanks the stars!" I thought, putting a paw over Elsa's ears as I got ready to put hours of getting my mate to do the house chores for me to use.

"No, I will not give you my baby!" I yelled, making myself sound as pitiful as I could stand, hunching over slightly as if the foil-wrapped spehhead had reached for her.

The Humans all got up and started moving towards us, fast.

"Stars bless how quick Human pack-bonding is!" I thought, biting back a smile as the pack quickly closed the distance.

THUMP THUMP

The largest of the Human pack, a tall, dark-skinned male built like an Arxur dreadnought, looked down at us, narrowing his eyes at the suddenly very still Exterminator he stood behind.

"Jaqi, why are you bothering this lady?" He said with a deep, bass voice.

"I-I was-"

"He wanted to take me and my baby for PD screening! He was about to reach for her!" I spoke up, adding a quiver to my voice to play up the 'Scared Mommy in Trouble' image while the other Humans started forming up behind and around me, ready to step in between me and the suited Venlil.

The Human's eyes narrowed further.

"Leave."

The Exterminator promptly turned around and darted, running faster than I thought those candy bar cosplays could let them.

"Don't let Jaqi punk on you, miss." The Human gently said, taking a knee to be closer to eye level with me, futile as the effort was. "Longplain don't let Exterminators carry flamethrowers or pistols on patrol anymore, and he's on thin ice with the captain as is."

"Thank you, sir!" I said, not having to put on an act this time, "I swear, they're only getting worse the longer they go on!"

"Heh, ain't that the truth." One of the other Humans said, this one with a lighter skin tone, closer to my own wool's color. "Captain's a good guy, but he's got a bunch of asswipes under him."

"Jayson Hunter, you watch your language! There's a baby here!" Another Human said, this one with wrinkled, light skin, a gray mane of fur hanging from his face.

Jay cringed, shoulders hunching up somewhat.

"Sorry, Grampa."

"Speaking of which, where're you two heading? We could walk with ya 'til you get where you're going, keep the Exterminators off ya." The big one asked.

My tail started swaying as I perked up.

"That would be so nice of you! I'm heading to a house on Plainview Avenue, supposed to be painted blue?"

The Humans looked at each other with wide eyes at that, before looking back to me.

"You wouldn't happen to know Thomas Varney, would you?" The old Human asked, making me blink.

"That's my mate, yes. How do you know him?"

The big Human chuckled, sounding like rolling thunder.

"Because he lives across the street from us! How'd you like that, Grampa? We met Tom's girls before they even got in the door!"

The old Human cackled at that, moving in front of me.

"I think us being late coming home was providence is what! Good evening to ya lady, I'm Billy Hunter and these my grandsons, Johnny, Jayson, Jacob, and Jackson! We're happy to meet ya!" He said as he stuck a hand out to me.

I shook it with my free paw, a wide smile lighting my snout up.

"Ilja, happy to meet you, too! And this is Elsa!" I said as I raised my daughter, who had woken up at some point and was now looking at the Hunter pack gathered around us.

"Well hello there, Miss Elsa! You know, every time I talk to him, Tom goes on and on about how happy he was that he got to name you, you know that?" Billy said, turning his full attention to the pup.

Elsa beeped at him, tail wagging as she stared at him.

"Yes ma'am, it's true! 'Tween you and me, I think he's a little smug about it!" Billy said, whispering the last part as if gossiping about someone sitting just across the room.

The beep he got made him smile wider.

"Say, why ain't Tom here, anyhow?" Johnny asked, looking around from where he was kneeling, "I figured he'd want to be here when his woman and baby showed up."

"Last I called, he was still getting the house ready for us. I got called into work for an emergency and the paint was still drying, so I had to take Elsa with me, and my workplace still won't Humans into the parking lot, let alone the building." I said, letting my frustration creep into my tone.

"Ah, Little Hill. Ain't no pleasant place, I can tell ya that." Jacob said as he scratched at the light skin under his brown mane.

"You can say that again. Thankfully, I'll be quitting soon, and the new job ought to let me spend more time at home. Speaking of which, if you're still offering to walk me there?"

Johnny nodded and stood up. "Sure thing miss, ain't but a little way from here," He said, leading the way as the others grouped up around me.

The bounce returned to my step as I walked on, listening in on the conversation that sparked up between two of the Hunter brothers.

"That's why mommy fell in love with daddy, puppy," I whispered to Elsa, chuckling as she turned her head this way and that to try and get all the Hunters in her field of view, "Because he did something just like this when your old daddy got mean to me while you were still in my tummy. It's also why I want you to grow up around Humans."

"Because Humans are pack animals, and being part of a pack is the most wonderful thing that's ever happened to us."
