Neonate beluga cruising alongside mom

Estimated by biologists to be about a month old, the neonatal folds on this beluga whale calf can still be seen as it surfaces beside its mother.
Beluga whales are born dark grey and gradually lighten as they mature. Calves are dependent upon nursing for the first year while their teeth are still emerging. Then they supplement their diets with shrimp and small fishes, relying on echolocation to hunt prey.
