Anyone just not take any meds, knowing you have narcolepsy? I have struggled with narcolepsy since I was in 6th grade and got diagnosed before college, did the meds thing, got degree, but now I live life without any meds and you start noticing a lot of things. I have NT1.
Hypothesis:
- This is probably case by case basis, but I think stress is the main cause for night terrors. I used to get them every night in high school/college, even treated with some meds, but now I live a low stress life and don't take any meds. I am super lucky as I have a flexible job, work part-time, remote, and have a great supporting husband. We are not rich but the low-stress, quiet life is very nice and really my ideal setting.
- Slower cognition in everything. Slower ability to think, concentrate, process information, basically living the lazy life. This was evident when I tried to hold intelligent conversations, but could not answer right away. Even when I was knowledgeable in the subject. Even at my job (I'd usually find an excuse to postpone answers to the next meeting). It has been quite frustrating. I tend to need someone to speak for me. This part is what I struggle with the most currently. When I tell people I have short-term memory, they tell me I should just try harder. I can never claim I know something 100% anymore from memory because I can't trust it.
- Less motivation to do anything. I still get stuff done when it needs to be done, but causes extreme fatigue quickly. Doing a day of laundry = sleep for a long time.
- Less stress, no meds (also not extremely severe narcolepsy prob just around low-medium tier) = an inconsistent sleep schedule, but feels good with no night terrors, side effects of medicine and free from stress factors and worries (until I have kids....). I feel like I am living the best time of my life. Also no driving unless nap first or I know it is safe for sure (I can recognize the signs for myself specifically)
So for those struggling....conclusion....try to reduce stress if you can. I gave up my career in order to live a lower stress life. I still make some money, but ahhhhhhhh life can't get bettterrrrrrr.....except getting rich hahaahahaha...good luck my friends.
