Taking xyrem as a single parent
Post Body

I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy with Cataplexy about 10 years ago. Initially low doses of stimulants worked well and allowed me to live and work an almost normal life. When I got pregnant I got off the medications and stayed off for a while because I was breastfeeding.

Now my son is 5 and I’ve been back on Modafinil for about a year and even at 300mg it is barely doing anything. Adding Ritalin (on top of the Modafinil) actually made me even worse, oddly, so I quit that after a month. My neurologist has been trying to convince me to try Xyrem or Xywav but I’m afraid because I’ve had bad reactions to other sleep medications and my son still sleeps in my bed despite extreme efforts to get him to sleep in his own room. He is autistic and has cerebral palsy so even if he does sleep in his own room, I have to have a camera on him at all times because he has no sense of danger. So my main worry with Xyrem is that I would be so knocked out that I wouldn’t hear him or wouldn’t be able to wake up or get up and he would get injured and I wouldn’t know until morning. Does anyone have any experience with this? Are you able to respond to emergencies or are you just unconscious until it wears off?
