In the mid 2000s Los Zetas Established themselves in Reynosa when El hummer was appointed as it's Plaza boss in 2006 to oversee it's day to day activities. At the time Los Zetas in reynosa were still a mystery and they were reffered to as "La Maña" or "Los Mañosos" which is spanish slang for the Mafia or Cartels in northern Tamaulipas.

Reynosa was an important corridor to Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel since it's a gateway directly into Texas By 2006 Los Zetas has already established "La Guardia" a group of Zeta Punteros-Look outs that operated in important parts of the city.

At the time walkie talkie radios weren't used as much by the look outs and instead Black Berry cell phones were used for communication since it was harder for the Mexican army to overhear the frequencies and conversations. This gave the black Berry cell phones a bad reputation since usually people from Reynosa involved in "La maña" used them

Different groups of Punteros-Look outs were stationed in strategic parts of the city. There was "La Guardia del puente" a group of look outs that oversaw the traffic in the international bridge and usually hung around the city center of Reynosa.

There was also "La Guardia del Rio"-the river guard was a group of look outs that kept watch over the Rio grande river for boarder patrol rafts and undocumented immigrants who attempted to cross without paying a "Piso" tax to "La Maña" would be sentenced to between 10-30 "Tablazos" -A beating with a wooden 2x4

Other Zeta Punteros were given cars and Blackberry cell phones to follow the Mexican army and Municipal police around reynosa on the daily basis, others were on bikes or walked around on foot in colonias- neighborhoods to keep watch over Zeta stash houses of local street dealers.

Most Punteros-look outs of Los Zetas got the Nickname "Marucheros" which basically translates to "Ramen eaters" this is because most Zeta look outs earned 2000 pesos every 15 days or around 110$ give or take. The Zetas look outs were willing to work for them in exchange for very low payments, since at the time Los Zetas were still exclusive to Ex military, Look outs hoped to impress Zetas commanders and instead become Gunrunners, or distributors inside the U.S.

Throughout these years "Desaparecion forzada" Forced disappearances and "Ejecucion extrajudicial" started rising. The soldiers of the Mexican army in Reynosa would track down Zeta look outs, abduct and take them back to the Military base and beat them to death. Some families had no Idea what their son's were even involved in.
