A Nod To Narcissists -Original poem by me, 12/2023-

I spent way too long in my own head, Letting unkind words make my bed. Pillow of shattered glass, bed of nails I only thought that I was destined to fail

Allowed myself to be maligned By others who deftly saw the signs A woman so full of desperation The perfect target for manipulation

Red flags wrapped up like Christmas gifts They used sweet words to uplift To reel me in on like a fish on a hook A few kind words were all it took.

Even the strongest aren't immune All narcissists sing the same old tune I'm not the only one who fell So many others have stories to tell

Don't you love me? give me your time Your friends and family will be fine You don't need anyone but me I'm the one who loves you, don't you see?

Why can't you do anything right? Why must you always start a fight? I've told you what to do 'til I'm blue in the face It's past time you learned your place.

What?! No, I didn't say that! You've got it wrong, your memory's bad. Why do you keep saying it's my fault?! You never listen to me at all.

Why didn't you answer when I called? I texted ten times, do you care at all? What were you doing, where have you been? I told you not to hang out with them!

All I'm doing is telling you the truth And all you wanna do is ask for proof I'm doing what's best and trying to help If you don't like it, do it yourself

You're lazy, you're worthless, you're wrong You're a liar, ungrateful, I was right all along You're a phony, you're a sinner, a loser Good for nothing, just a user

We've spent way too long suffering your abuse, But we're not your verbal punching bags to use When you feel like things aren't going your way We've had enough and we're not gonna stay

No it wasn't all bad, but let's talk facts Amidst the joy were those verbal attacks Then you'd feel bad and apologize But your behavior proved those sorries were lies

Now we're the villains 'cause we had enough We said it's over though ending is rough That's okay, we'll take the blame At least we're finished playing the game.
